Washington, DC— On Wednesday, Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Marietta) continued her work to prevent gun violence with a series of events, including meeting personally with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his staff, and urging him to bring common sense gun legislation to a vote in the Senate.

“100 Americans die every day to gun violence. And every day that we fail to take action, siblings and spouses across this country will feel the same agony, the same grief that comes with losing a loved one,” McBath said. “Americans are asking Sen. McConnell to fulfil his duty to act on this legislation that will protect our families and save innocent lives.”

Rep. McBath spoke with Senator McConnell following a meeting with his staff where she was joined by Rep. John Lewis (GA-05), Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02), Rep. William Lacy Clay (MO-01), Rep. David Cicilline (RI-01), survivors, and advocates from Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and March For Our Lives. A video of members reflecting after the meeting can be found here. Senator McConnell has refused to act on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, since it passed the House over 200 days ago with support from both sides of the aisle. Universal background checks are supported by a majority of the American people.

These meetings come on the same day that the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on assault weapons, the first hearing of its kind in several decades. McBath’s remarks and questions can be found here.

At a rally to end gun violence held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, Rep. McBath joined House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Reps. Robin Kelly, Mike Thompson, Katherine Clark, John Lewis, and Yvette D. Clarke, as well as Senators Murphy and Blumenthal. The rally brought together advocates and survivors from across the country to fight toward ending gun violence in America. A video of the event can be found here and McBath’s remarks can be found here.
