Sandy Springs, GA— Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-06) held back-to-back virtual events on Wednesday for dozens of students in the Sixth District hoping to gain coding skills or learn more about the opportunity to attend a U.S. service academy. At 6:00pm, students joined Rep. McBath and Kennesaw State Associate Professor of Gaming, Dr. Michael Franklin, for information about the Congressional App Challenge and various coding resources. At 7:00pm, Rep. McBath and representatives from the five U.S. service academies hosted students for Sixth District Academy Day to discuss the congressional nomination process for United States service academies and to field questions from students about the nomination process and the service academies.
“I was grateful for the opportunity to connect with our students virtually and share two exciting opportunities that my office can offer as they begin the school year,” McBath said. “Both of these opportunities can serve as powerful launchpads for students as they pursue their passions. The Congressional App Challenge offers young people the chance to gain invaluable skills in coding, which can provide limitless opportunities in their education and future careers. I was also honored to host my second annual Academy Day to meet and talk with so many incredible students who aspire to serve our country.”
The Congressional App Challenge is open to all middle and high school students in the Sixth District. Winners of the challenge may have their apps displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building and on the House of Representatives website. Students are encouraged to register to compete by September 10th and make their final app submission no later than October 19th. For more information, students can visit the official Congressional App Challenge website at CongressionalAppChallenge.us or contact Rep. McBath’s Sandy Springs District Office at (470) 773-6330.
As a member of Congress, McBath may nominate up to ten high school seniors for each vacant service academy slot allotted to the Sixth Congressional District of Georgia. Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy at West Point; the U.S. Naval Academy; the U.S. Air Force Academy; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination for appointment. The deadline to submit applications is Sunday, October 18, 2020 at 11:59pm.
