This week, Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-06) participated in a Meals on Wheels delivery route with Senior Services North Fulton. Her Sandy Springs District Office has adopted a delivery route for the Sandy Springs community and will continue assisting with meal deliveries each month.
“I was delighted to spend some time delivering meals and visiting with Sandy Springs residents,” McBath said. “The Meals on Wheels program administered by Senior Services North Fulton fulfills a critical need for nutrition services to seniors in our community, and it offers a chance for volunteers to check in on individuals who may not have much contact with friends and family. During this pandemic, it is more important than ever that we are checking in on our neighbors and looking out for one another. I am so grateful that Senior Services North Fulton continues to provide this essential service for those who need it.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for Meals on Wheels delivery as more seniors face economic hardship or are unable to leave their homes to buy groceries. Senior Services North Fulton estimates that they will provide 50,000 meals to seniors in 2020, an increase of 12,000 meals compared to 2019. Their Meals on Wheels program serves over 2,000 residents in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell or Sandy Springs.
McBath recently cosponsored legislation that would establish a competitive grant program to repair, replace, and customize home-based meal delivery vehicles that provide nutritious meals to seniors who are ill or otherwise homebound. The bipartisan, bicameral HOME Meals Act was endorsed by Meals on Wheels of America.
