Washington, D.C. – Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-06), Vice-Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, joined Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) and 212 members of the House of Representatives in sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urging him to immediately call the Senate back into session to pass H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act. Both of these bipartisan bills were passed by the House in February of this year and have been blocked for a vote for more than 160 days.
“These are bipartisan bills that will help save lives,” McBath said. “I lost a child to gun violence. I know the pain too many parents are feeling. The vast majority of Americans are asking for common-sense legislation to protect our families, our friends, and our communities from gun violence. This cannot wait any longer; we must act now to pass these life-saving pieces of legislation.”
McBath is an original co-sponsor of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act. In June, McBath also introduced the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order (FERPO) Act, H.R. 3076. Extreme risk, or “red flag” laws empower loved ones and law enforcement to ensure that those who pose a threat to themselves or others do not have access to firearms. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have enacted extreme risk laws to allow law enforcement adequate time to respond to warning signs of a planned shooting or suicide. This common-sense gun violence prevention legislation is identical to S.2521 – a bipartisan bill that was introduced in the Senate by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) during the 115th Congress.
McBath also succeeded in securing $50 million in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health for important firearm injury and mortality prevention research to study the gun violence epidemic and find solutions to help keep families safe.

Dear Leader McConnell:
We strongly urge you to take immediate action to call the Senate back into session to pass H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and H.R 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act.
In February, the new Democratic House Majority took swift action to pass these bipartisan bills which not only save lives, but also has the support of more than 90 percent of the American people. Since that time, you have allowed more than 150 days to pass and countless lives have been lost including those most recently lost in Gilroy, California, El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois and the many others who will never make the headlines.
This inaction must stop. We know background checks save lives. Every day background checks stop more than 170 felons and 50 domestic abusers from getting a gun. Any delay to pass commonsense gun violence prevention legislation only increases the chances that more innocent people in America may suffer from the tragic and needless loss caused by gun violence.
Again, we urge you to follow the leadership of the House Democratic Majority and immediately come back into session to pass H.R 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, that could prevent dangerous criminals from obtaining weapons and save lives.
