Sandy Springs, GA— Today, Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Marietta) joined faith leaders, survivors, constituents, activists, and volunteers with the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, for a roundtable discussion. Following the conversation, the group held a press conference about the local impact of gun violence in the community.

“It is as important as ever to sit down and listen to our friends and neighbors as we work together to find common-sense solutions that will help protect our families. We cannot afford to wait another moment,” McBath said. “I thank God every day for the opportunity to work to help prevent gun violence and protect our families, and I thank this community for supporting this work. The time to act is now.”

Rep. McBath spoke with faith leaders, constituents, and community members at the roundtable discussion at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dunwoody. Senate leadership has refused to act on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, since it passed the House over 220 days ago with support from both sides of the aisle. Universal background checks are supported by a majority of the American people.

McBath has also introduced H.R. 3076, the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order (FERPO) Act. This legislation would empower individuals and law enforcement to ensure that those who pose a threat to themselves and others do not have access to firearms. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have enacted extreme risk laws. McBath also succeeded in securing $50 million in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health for important firearm injury and mortality prevention research to study the gun violence epidemic and find solutions to help keep American families safe.
