Washington, DC— Today, Rep. Lucy McBath, a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, joined a markup on H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act and expressed the importance of addressing the staggering price of prescription drugs in the United States.

“The cost of health care in this country is out of control and one of the major drivers is the cost of prescription drugs. I continue to hear from people that lowering these costs is a priority,” said McBath. “There are people in this country who cannot afford the medications they need to survive. We all need to work together to be sure health care is accessible, medication is affordable, and that people with pre-existing conditions are protected.”

The markup comes as part of a bold plan by the House of Representatives to make prescription drugs more affordable. H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act will provide access and a level playing field to American taxpayers and patients, end the ban on Medicare negotiating directly with drug companies, and allow all Americans to benefit from lower drug prices.

“I came to Congress to reduce the costs of health care,” McBath continued. “Americans are sick and tired of endless price increases while big pharmaceutical companies make historic profits. We need to find a different way. American lives and the health of our nation depend upon it.”

The House Education and Labor Committee later voted to approve the H.R. 3 for consideration by the full House of Representatives. During the markup, McBath shared a personal story and her experience with expensive medical treatment. Watch her full remarks here.
