Sandy Springs, GA — Today, Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Marietta) is launching the “McBath Summer Storytime” series. The program is designed to encourage reading for children and students during the summer months. Families can tune in to Rep. McBath’s Facebook page every Sunday at 7:30pm for a bedtime story with the Congresswoman. The first story in the series will be premiered online at Facebook.com/RepLucyMcBath, starting Sunday, June 28, 2020 at 7:30pm.
“This summer will be unlike any other, and family life has drastically changed. We know this is an astonishingly difficult time, and many parents and guardians are finding themselves as full-time employees, full-time teachers, and full-time caregivers,” said McBath. “I’m looking forward to safely gathering virtually and reading some of my favorite stories, the ones I used to read to Jordan and when I was a little girl. These weekly evening story times will be an opportunity for all of us to take a moment to enjoy a children’s classic and share the joy of reading with our kids.”
Continuing to read during the summer is crucial for many children. Many students lose some of their learning gains from the previous year over the course of the summer. This year, given school closings and the difficulties of distance learning, some students could lose nearly a third more of their literacy skills than during a normal summer, according to a study from the Brookings Institution. McBath’s Summer Storytime series will encourage students and families to continuing exploring the joys of reading together.
