Duluth, GA — During the first District Work Period of 2023, Congresswoman Lucy McBath attended two meetings with local colleges in Georgia’s Seventh Congressional District. On Thursday, she met with the President of Georgia Gwinnett College, Dr. Jann Joseph. On Friday, she met with the Vice President of Communications of Gwinnett Technical College, Chuck McKinnon. During these meetings, McBath discussed workforce development programs, equity and access to educational opportunities, and partnerships with local employers for apprenticeships.

“For those who want to pursue higher education, I am fighting hard to make sure we provide every opportunity for affordable college and well-paying employment opportunities upon graduation,” McBath said. “We must continue working to uplift our nation’s students and empower them to reach their full potential–without being saddled with extreme debt. I am so grateful to Georgia Gwinnett College and Gwinnett Technical College for welcoming me to their campuses so I can see firsthand some of the great work in higher education that is happening in our community!”

Since her first term in Congress, McBath has championed numerous pieces of legislation to protect student loan borrowers and support and serve those who are pursuing a college education. During her first two terms, she championed bills to prevent alcohol and substance misuse on college campuses, provide Pell Grant eligibility and loan-forgiveness options for students who were defrauded by for-profit institutions, and simplify the application process and expand opportunities for federal student aid. She has also championed legislation to expand a competitive grant program that aims to build community colleges’ capacity to provide employment and training programs that lead to post-secondary credentials for in-demand jobs.
