Sandy Springs, GA — Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Marietta) recently concluded her McBath Summer Storytime virtual reading program with a tenth installment. Each Sunday, hundreds of children, families, and community members tuned in to watch and were encouraged to read along together.

“Family life was drastically different this summer, and we know this is an astonishingly difficult time where many parents and guardians are finding themselves as full-time employees and full-time caregivers,” said McBath. “I truly enjoyed reading each book this summer, especially the ones I used to read to Jordan and when I was a little girl. These weekly Sunday evening storytimes were an opportunity to share the joy of reading with our kids, and I thank everyone who tuned in over the last few months.”

Continuing to read during the summer is crucial for children. Many students lose some of their learning gains from the previous year over the course of the summer. This year, given school closings and the difficulties of distance learning, some students stood to lose nearly a third more of their literacy skills than during a normal summer, according to a study from the Brookings Institution. McBath’s Summer Storytime series encouraged students and families to continuing exploring the joys of reading together.
